Celebrating the Mother in All of Us
Yesterday I celebrated being a woman, my sacred female spirit and being a mother. On the eve of Mother’s Day, a “holiday” of commercial exploitations I celebrated. Though, I guess it is positive that the world has set forth days to remind us to send out gratification for those things we should be doing regularly and naturally.
My celebration was among other women; mothers of naturally born children and others who simply exercise that innate mothering instinct that we all possess. It was an outdoor Nia celebration. The day could not have been more perfect. A spring day with a slight breeze and low humidity. Gathered in the grass we brought forth our inner child, we sent love and gratification to all around us, we shed the power and energy of the negativity within our lives. We gave homage and appreciation to our womanly power and our womanly hands that produce work and strength as well.
The dance where we took notice of our hands reminded me of a conversation with my daughter who came home expressing her pain over noticing that other girls were skinnier, prettier and more popular than she. I then told her to notice that we are each graced with beauty and strength that is unique. I asked her to look at her hands, her legs, her eyes and realize what each of them do and that it is special and that her hands do things others do not. Her legs stronger than those of waif like appearance. That her eyes hold all the information she absorbs, which is different from that of those around her. Unique, special. When was the last time I reflected upon my own advice and wisdom? Yesterday, probably 3 years after that life lesson with my angelic counterpart.
As I read and partake in celebrations with women who have come to realize their true beauty and strength I am placed back on my own path of which I have sometimes lost sight of. There is a poem that circulates about how all in life comes and goes but that sisterhood is for a lifetime. To me that sisterhood runs deep to my friends, my daughters and their daughters, to family and all those who join me in bringing to each day the sacred feminine and nurturing love that is vital to the world.
So on this Mother’s Day this is where I am, inner celebration of that nurturing spirit that lies within us and allows us to protect and give and to spread love to all, our own children and every living soul.
Happy Mother’s Day.
